Pets are playful, curious, and sometimes a little mischievous — and that’s what makes them so fun. But when curiosity leads to swallowing something they shouldn’t, it can quickly turn dangerous. This is known as foreign body ingestion, and it’s a common cause of emergency veterinary visits.

Keeping Pets Safe: How to Prevent Foreign Object Ingestion

At Canyon View Cares Veterinary Hospital in Tremonton, we’re committed to helping pet parents recognize the risks and keep their homes safe.

What Is Foreign Body Ingestion

When a dog or cat eats an object that can’t pass through the digestive tract, it can cause a blockage or even internal injury. Common culprits include toys, bones, string, and clothing. Some cases require surgery, making prevention essential.

Warning Signs to Look For

  • Vomiting or repeated retching

  • Loss of appetite

  • Lethargy or lack of energy

  • Diarrhea or constipation

  • Abdominal pain or bloating

  • Excessive drooling

  • Sudden changes in mood or hiding behavior

If you notice these symptoms, contact us immediately.

Household Dangers to Watch Out For

For Cats:

  • String, yarn, or dental floss

  • Hair ties, ribbons, and rubber bands

  • Tinsel and small ornaments

  • Houseplants and floral arrangements

  • Tiny toys or beads

For Dogs:

  • Socks and underwear

  • Small toy pieces or squeakers

  • Cooked bones and corn cobs

  • Sticks or rocks from outdoor play

  • Trash items or wrappers

Prevention Tips

Highly recommend!! The vet took us in for an emergency visit late at night. Treated my family with so much care and respect and when our puppy passed away from her trauma they cared for her extremely humanely and gave my kids a sweet condolence card with her paw and nose print. Thank you so much for the great care!

We have loved our experiences with Canyon View Cares. They were carrying and sensitive when we had to put our aged cat to sleep. They were also very gentle, caring and thorough with our aging yellow lab. So great!

My dog was up all night severely sick and I knew she needed to be seen by a vet. Canyon view had done such a great job neutering my cat I decided to try and set up a time. The big obstical though is that I work at the school district as a non salary employee. My paycheck drys up this time of year. Canyon view was amazing and they understood. The helped me find a way to pay my bill, got me in to the vet the same day, and worked hard to help my dog with out charging me an arm and a leg. It was very compassionate care and you could tell they really wanted to help us. I would recommend these guys to anyone who wants a competent vet who truly cares about your pet and not just their pay check.
